A city-wide garage sale is scheduled for August 1st in Vero Beach. The bi-annual garage sale will take place again in January so the snowbirds can participate.

The cost is FREE to participate, all you need to do is register at https://verobeachgaragesale.com and list any specialty items you have to offer if you’d like to be included on the map. The map will be distributed the day before the event to make sure everyone gets maximum exposure. Shoppers can also register to receive a copy of the map.

A quieter week than last, but a good one for people who care about conservation, jobs, and where the county is headed. Quick reads, as always.

Land Trust locks in a key piece of the future St. Sebastian River Greenway
The standout local story this week. The Indian River Land Trust acquired a 1.6-acre parcel along the South Prong of the St. Sebastian River, a small piece that does outsized work by connecting land the trust already protects into a continuous corridor. It builds on a 36-acre buy in 2023 and another 20 acres in 2025, and the long-term vision is the St. Sebastian River Greenway, a connected conservation and public-access corridor along one of the county's prettiest waterways. The new parcel mixes uplands and wetlands with mature cypress, oak, and cabbage palm, and protecting it helps water quality and wildlife movement while opening the door to future public access.

County steps in with emergency funding for Senior Resource Association
A safety-net story worth knowing about. Facing rising maintenance and operating costs, Senior Resource Association was headed toward a roughly $236,000 shortfall this fiscal year, and CEO Karen Deigl asked commissioners for emergency help. The commission approved $263,000 in gap funding unanimously. Chair Deryl Loar framed it as part of a wider squeeze: "This is a crisis that we are all facing," touching every department and constitutional office. Senior Resource runs Meals on Wheels and transportation that a lot of older residents depend on, so this one keeps essential services running.

Push to fund the Humiston boardwalk gets restarted
Councilman John Carroll is reviving the stalled fundraising effort to replace the Humiston Beach Park boardwalk, the island landmark Hurricane Nicole destroyed back in November 2022. The council approved a five-member Humiston Boardwalk Citizens Committee that will meet at least every two weeks to restart fundraising and set up sponsorship levels to recognize big donors. Carroll notes people already gave $20,000, $25,000, even $50,000, but the city never created a way to thank them, and the momentum faded. He's kickstarted things with a matching grant that brings his own family's total to $20,000. If you'd been wondering whatever happened to the boardwalk, this is the answer.

Youth group's solar suitcases are powering classrooms in Kenya
A nice one to end on. A project out of the Gifford Youth Achievement Center sent solar suitcases, portable power units, to Kenya, where they're making what the group calls a big impact powering classrooms without reliable electricity. A reminder that some good work here reaches a lot farther than the county line.

J.J. Manning's Irish Pub is changing hands after 15 years
End of an era for a downtown favorite. After 15 years, owners John and Becky are stepping away from J.J. Manning's Irish Pub, a longtime Sebastian gathering spot known for its pints and burgers. In their farewell to regulars they called it "a home, a gathering place, and a true extension of our family." Worth a stop if you have memories there.

The fishing is worth a look this week
For anyone who wets a line, Sebastian Daily's latest inlet fishing report is out, timed to the summer bite around the inlet and Riverview Park. A good weekend to get out early before the afternoon storms.

Thousands of new Space Coast jobs headed our way
Good regional economic news. Speaking from the Farnborough Air Show, Governor DeSantis announced that Relativity Space will expand its Space Coast operations with major capital investment and thousands of high-skill, high-wage jobs by 2034. The deal makes the company eligible for up to $134 million through the state's Spaceport Improvement Program. The Space Coast is close enough that this ripples into our labor market and housing demand.

Treasure Coast animal hoarding case rescues 92 pets
A hard but locally relevant story. Authorities removed 92 animals, 80 cats and 12 dogs, from the home of a postal worker in what the Martin County sheriff called the worst hoarding case he's seen. The animals went to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast in Palm City, and because some are microchipped, a few may be reunited with prior owners. If you're missing a microchipped pet in the area, it's worth calling.

A first-of-its-kind satellite-repair mission launched from the Cape
SpaceX launched a Northrop Grumman Mission Robotic Vehicle on Tuesday, designed to repair and upgrade satellites already in orbit rather than replacing them. A genuinely new capability, and one more sign of how busy our stretch of coast has become.

Wetter pattern moving in. Highs hold near 88 to 90, but rain chances climb through the weekend and into next week, hitting 65 to 75 percent Sunday through Tuesday. Today and Saturday morning are your better bets for outdoor plans. Keep an umbrella handy and don't park under the low spots that flood.
